Reducing uncertainty cost

Tank gauging uncertainty costs money, since you might lose the value of the product volumes that you cannot verify with certainty. Improving the measurement accuracy in your tank gauging system reduces your margin of error, which means reduced uncertainty during transfer control/verification, inventory management, and loss control.

The table shows how more precise tank gauging reduces your net volume uncertainty, and how much this translates to in financial savings. In our example, we use a crude oil tank. You can enter your own figures into the formula to see how large the savings would be on your own tank farm.

Saving dollars by reducing uncertainty

5 mm (0.2 inches) is a typical improvement in level accuracy compared to other gauges. You can key in your own estimated value.
**  0.6 °C (1°F) is a typical improvement in average temperature accuracy compared to a single spot temperature sensor.

Precise levels. Rosemount TankRadar Rex has an instrument accuracy of ± 0.5 mm (0.02 in.) However, the installed accuracy is also determined by external factors. Rosemount TankRadar Rex often gives an installed accuracy increase of ± 5 mm (0.02 in.) compared with other measurement methods, such as floats, displacers, mechanical gauges, and less advanced radar sensors.
Precise temperature. The volume of the product is also dependent upon its temperature. A more exact temperature measurement provides a considerable reduction of the uncertainty associated with net volume measurement. Since products in a storage tank tend to stratify, the best measurement accuracy is achieved by measuring temperature at several different levels simultaneously with a multispot temperature sensor.
